Welcome to themarysurrattproject.com, an on-line venue dedicated to promoting the untold story of Mary Surratt, the first woman executed by the federal government, because of her involvement with Lincoln assassin, John Wilkes Booth.  A Confederate sympathizer who was hanged on July 7, 1865, Surratt’s guilt/innocence has been debated ever since a rope broke her neck.

Los Angeles writer, Ned O’Neill, artistically uncovers dimensions of this woman’s story that have been glossed over by historians:

Mary Surratt was arrested without charge.

Her military tribunal was ruled unconstitutional.

This type of injustice has been repeated - Pearl Harbor and 9/11.

We are all complicit in Mary Surratt's death!  Time and time again, the need for vengeance has blinded Americans from the truth.  Although difficult to admit, our history is rife with examples of individual civil liberties being violated in the pursuit of national security – the Civil War, WW II as well as the War on Terror.

And all roads lead back to the precedent - Mary Surratt.
